What is the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)?
The VCE is the senior secondary certificate awarded in Victoria by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, usually across Years 11 and 12. Each study is built from four units. To be awarded the certificate you satisfactorily complete at least 16 units, including at least three units from the English group and three Units 3 and 4 sequences in addition to the English one. Australian universities use the results to calculate an entry rank.
How is the VCE scored?
Every Units 3 and 4 sequence you take for a score gives you a study score from 0 to 50. The score comes from School-assessed Coursework marked at your school and from the end-of-year examinations, standardised against everyone else who took that study. The middle of the state sits near 30, and the scale is designed so that a score is comparable between studies rather than between schools.
What is the difference between Units 1 and 2 and Units 3 and 4?
Units 1 and 2 are usually taken in Year 11 and are assessed by your school as satisfactory or not satisfactory: they do not produce a study score. Units 3 and 4 are taken as a sequence, usually in Year 12, and they are the ones that are scored and examined. Some studies let you take Units 3 and 4 without Units 1 and 2 first, and your school decides that.
What is a SAC?
A SAC is School-assessed Coursework: a task set and marked by your school against the outcomes in the VCAA study design. Your school decides the format and the timing, the VCAA sets what it has to assess, and the marks are later moderated against how your cohort performs in the examination. A few studies also set a School-assessed Task, which is a larger folio or product marked the same way.
What is the ATAR and how is it worked out?
The ATAR is the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank, and it is calculated by VTAC rather than by the VCAA. VTAC scales your study scores, then builds an aggregate from your English study, your next three highest studies, and a tenth of up to two more. The aggregate is turned into a rank between 0 and 99.95, which says where you sit against the rest of your age group.
What is the GAT?
The GAT is the General Achievement Test, and you sit it if you are taking at least one Units 3 and 4 sequence. Section A assesses literacy and numeracy and is reported on your achievement statement. Section B assesses reading and reasoning across mathematics, science, technology, humanities and the arts. It is not a study, and it is not marked as one: the VCAA uses it as a check on School-assessed Coursework and as a safety net if something goes wrong on an exam day.
How can AI tools help with VCE study?
They are useful for explaining a concept a second way, generating practice questions on a topic you keep losing marks on, and giving feedback on a draft before your teacher sees it. They are not useful for producing the work itself. The VCAA requires that the work you submit is your own, so anything a tool writes for you is a problem rather than a shortcut. Use it to check your thinking, not to replace it.
Can you do the VCE without a study score?
Yes. An unscored VCE means you complete the units and meet the requirements, but you do not sit the examinations and you do not receive study scores, so no ATAR is calculated. It is a decision made with your school, and it changes what you can apply for directly after Year 12. The VCE Vocational Major is a separate senior secondary programme with its own structure.
